This R&D provides information on Title IX. Passed as part of the Education Amendment of 1972, Title IX is widely recognized as raising the funding for women’s athletics, it also mandates that school’s treat men and women equally in education programs. As a result, it covers sexual harassment and sexual violence because those crimes are deemed to impair the education of both men and women. Title IX is becoming a public issue again in light of the push to unionize Northwestern University’s football team (which could negatively impact the funding for women’s athletics) and federal investigations into fifty-five colleges and universities for not properly handling sexual abuse complaints.
