Nova Senior High School, one of the premier forensic programs in the country, held its annual Titan Invitational last weekend in Davie, Florida. Twenty-eight extempers participated in the tournament and Daniel Greene of The University School (FL) took the championship, going straight 1’s in the final round. Sydney Britton of The American Heritage School (FL) took second and Greene’s teammate Samantha Koreman took third.
The tournament broke to semi-finals, but due to the size of the field, only the finalists earned a tentative qualifying leg to the 2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Northwestern University. Three of those in the final were previously qualified, so only three extempers earned a qualifying leg at the Titan Invitational. Koreman wrapped up her category three qualification by earning a qualifying leg, making her the only extemper to tentatively qualify for the TOC last weekend. All extempers who earned a qualifying leg are indicated in italics in the listing of results.
There are no qualifying tournaments being held this weekend, but following weekend features two premier tournaments: The Glenbrooks, the largest high school-held invitational tournament of the year, in Northbrook, Illinois and the Villiger Tournament, which will be held at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Glenbrooks is a tournament that followers of the national circuit should keep an eye on, as four of the last five Glenbrooks champions have won an NFL national championship in the season that they won the tournament. The last five champions of the Glenbrooks also made the NFL final round in their chosen extemp category.
