2010-2011 Extemp Central National Points Race: St. Mark’s Calculations

Since the St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational allows extempers to do International and United States Extemp, Extemp Central combines extemper’s finishes in each category to prevent counting both as separate tournaments and giving extempers who attended St. Mark’s an advantage over other competitors in the National Points Race.  Prior to St. Mark’s, Extemp Central announced how it would determine which extempers would receive National Points Race points.  At St. Mark’s, extempers received points based on their finishes in International and United States Extemp.  The six extempers with the lowest point totals were awarded National Points Race points.

Here is a quick rehash of that system:

1st place = 1 pt.
2nd place = 3 pts.
3rd place = 5 pts.
4th place = 7 pts.
5th place = 9 pts.
6th place = 10 pts.
Semi-Finalist = 15 pts.
Quarter-Finalist = 25 pts.
Non-Break = 35 pts.

After making the necessary calculations, here are the six extempers who received National Points Race points.  They will receive fifth tier points in relation to where they are ranked below.  Extempers who just missed the cut are also identified.

1st = Alessandro Pauri (Flower Mound High School, Texas) — [3rd IX (5) + 2nd USX (2)] = 8 pts.
2nd = Nikki Sachdeva (Plano East High School, Texas) — [5th IX (9) + 1st USX (1)] = 10 pts.
3rd = Karthik Sastry (Montgomery Bell Academy, Tennessee) — [4th IX (7) + 3rd USX (5)]  = 12 pts.
4th = Bushra Rahmanan (Alief Elsik High School, Texas) — [6th IX (10) + 6th USX (10)] = 20 pts.
5th = Shikha Garg (Plano Senior High School, Texas) — [7th IX (15) + 4th USX (7)] = 22 pts.
6th = Akshay Narayanan (Plano Senior High School, Texas) — [1st IX (1) + Quarters USX (25)] = 26 pts.

*Will Hoenig (Lake Travis High School, Texas) — [8th IX (15) + 7th USX (15)] =  30 pts.

For the National Points Race, Alessandro Pauri will be credited with a victory at St. Mark’s, which may serve him well if there is a tiebreaker later in the year.  On Thursday, Extemp Central will update the National Points Race so check back then to see who went up and who went down.  Extemp Central will update MBA Bracketology to reflect these results on Friday.
